  • Engineers sentenced to 1 year for espionage case (AP)

AP - Two engineers from China were sentenced to a year in prison Friday for stealing computer chip designs from their Silicon Valley employers and trying to smuggle the secrets to their homeland to launch a government-backed startup there.

  • Broadband makes tiny town an English-teaching hub (AP)

Hampton works part-time for Eleutian Technology, a Ten Sleep company that connects area teachers with students in Korea for English-language classes via the Internet. (AP Photo/Bob Vines)AP - The nearest Wal-Mart is two hours away, and only foul weather, a deer in the road or a Washakie County sheriff's deputy would slow down anyone with a mind to drive there faster.

  • Web sites offer real estate agent rankings (AP)

AP - Word of mouth is one of the most common ways homebuyers and sellers find a real estate agent. Now, there are several Web sites that tout a more scientific approach: ranking agents based on criteria such as years of experience, how many sales they've closed, and the number of positive testimonials from past clients.

Zookoda, a popular email marketing company, is up for auction

PDF Print E-mail

Zookoda is free email marketing and services company, designed especially for bloggers. Zookoda enables you to send a daily, weekly or monthly summary of your latest blog posts directly into your vistors’ inbox as newsletters.

While some companies have the ability to hire investment banks to help them sell themselves (see Grouper and Napster for recent examples), eBay is proving to the be liquidity path of last resort for many struggling web startups, or those that simply want to sell out for a few hundred thousand dollars. At least six “web 2.0″ companies who’ve attempted to sell themselves on eBay over the last year, and four of the six have been put up for sale in the last month. As a side note, a Digg user profile that sold on ebay for $822 in July 2006.

Current update on the six auctions: Three (jux2, DigForIt and Kiko) sold, two (Madhens and Huckabuck) didn’t and one (Crispads) is still pending with no bidders and a $90,000 minimum price.

Zookoda is next up. The current service launched on March 13, 2006 and version 2 was launched in May 2006. The Zookoda.com domain name as well as the related service (source code, images, blog, partner website, admin website, database, server and documentation) is up for auction, as well as consulting time for the transition.

Unlike the six companies above, however, Zookoda is holding a direct auction outside of ebay so that, in the words of co-founder Nick McNaughton, “we can have some control over our own destiny and make a considered decision on an appropriate partner.” In other words, Zookoda will have the ability to choose a partner outside of the normal eBay rules - they will not have to sell to the highest bidder and can consider things like equity/cash combinations, choose a lower bidder because it’s a better fit, etc.

Expressions of interest are being gathered from September 25 through October 6. Interested parties will have an opportunity to conduct due diligence on the service, and final bids must be received by October 13.

Nick won’t say what their minimum price is, but given that Zookoda has over 5,000 passionate blog customers and an extremely feature rich service, there will be at least a few interested parties.

I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. The giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered. We need a true revolution of values to unseat the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. A nation that continues year after year to pour money into war and ignoring social uplift is approaching spiritual death. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
